Sunday’s Grateful list

Today I am starting a list of what I am grateful for. This is not a new thing. I journal everyday and the first thing I do every morning after I ride is write down what I am grateful for. I am not riding at the moment and because of the accident I have a broken left ulna. I am left handed so it is very difficult to write anything. I am not at this stage going to teach myself to be right handed! So instead of writing in my journal I am going to blog what I am grateful about. You can all choose to read it or not but I think it will be a very useful thing for me to do in my recovery!

I am grateful for being alive.

I am grateful for all the amazing staff at the Royal Brisbane Hospital who have saved my life.

I am grateful that my husband David was on the ride on Sunday ( which is very unusual) and came in the ambulance with me. I love him so so much.

I am grateful for Deb Aitcheson,  Dave Shelberg, Marcel Bengston and all my other riding buddies for the amazing support and encouragement on the ride. Deb, Dave and Marcel thank you for holding my hand, back, head and whatever else you did on that mountain that day.

I am grateful and amazed I climbed Nebo and Glorious that day on my bike . I think I am amazing for doing so.

I am grateful for my Dad. He met us at the hospital and organized and liaised with everyone in the most professional manner. I believe the staff would have performed an amazing job regardless of Dad but Dad was amazing too!

I am grateful for my beautiful Mum. She has been like a fairy godfather going into our home making beds, doing washing etc and all without telling anyone. David comes home to a beautiful perfect house. She is just special.

I am grateful for all the love and support that I have received from everyone. I cannot elaborate on this as I am now crying.

That is enough for today. I will do some more tomorrow.

A passionate response to Terrorism

I was terribly distressed by the events against Charlie Hebdo on the 7th January, 2015. I know I am not alone with the distress I feel. Today I want to put some thoughts about it down . I want to be able to talk to my children about what is happening in the world in a way that is positive and a way that allows me to continue to believe that our world is humane and hopeful.

The US Department of Defense defines Terrorism as the “unlawful use of — or threatened use of force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives”. I believe that the behavior of terrorists is incorrect. I believe that most of us believe that the use of force and violence or threatened use of force or violence is abhorrent and the fear that it engenders is also abhorrent. I also believe that one of the problems with terrorism is many people disagree about the role that governments and societies have played in why this terrorism has come about and what our response as individuals and society and as governments should be.

While considering my thoughts about this problem I found the names of a number of terrorist organizations. There are many – Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Hezbollah and ISIS are a few of the more notorious ones. There a numerous more listed on the Australian government terrorist watch list. 17 people were murdered in Paris in January as a result of some political cartoons. It is also alleged that 2000 people were murdered in Nigeria in January by the organization Boko Haram. I am surprised that the Paris incident has caused such an outpouring of public outrage and the murders in Nigeria have not caused such an enormous response.

Regardless of the response I believe that we have as a human race joined together to denounce the use of terrorism.

I have also read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is available on the United Nations website and the list of human rights on the Amnesty International Website. It is no surprise that neither place states that it is a basic human right to kill others to persue vengeance for your religious persecution. I have had quite a lot of discussion around the kitchen table with my family about the French’s right to persue free speech and publish cartoons that invoke anger and therefore heighten the possibility of violence as in the case of Charlie Hebdo. Personally I would prefer to live in an environment where members of our community care for each other and are compassionate towards those of different races and religions. I would prefer that cartoons such as those that Charlie Hebdo publish are restricted.

I also believe in free speech. I do not agree with the way Charlie Hebdo delivered their message but I agree with their right to say it. Some individuals will find these political cartoons offensive and some will find the black humour an appropriate avenue to highlight issues. I believe if 10 different people read  the same newspaper article, listen to a the same speech, go to the same lecture, participate in the same social media sites each individual will have a different response. Each individual is responsible for their own emotional response. If we do not like what is said that does not give us the right to use violence or even offensive language as a response.

In teaching my children about terrorism I will continue to use this example. I will teach that we each have responsibility for our own emotional response to situations.   I will explain that just because we do not like what is said or done it gives no excuse to use violence of any kind as a response. I will continue to believe that “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world” ( as stated in the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). I will continue to believe that we should not ourselves use violence to combat terrorism.

  • I am a good rider with good skills. I am not a fast rider.
  • Everyone gets tired and has the potential for injury if they do not look after themselves and recover properly.
  • David Tucker hurts sometimes……..

My Best moment was climbing the back of Checkers Hill and not getting off until I crossed the top of the hill! 2015-01-20 12.32.39 Thank you to Marcel, Kath, Tammy, Deb, John and Deb for their amazing support and organisation. A passionate response to my year in 2014 and what 2015 holds.

It is Friday 2nd January today and I am sitting contemplating my New Year’s Inspiration List for 2015 and reviewing 2014.

2014 was a wonderful year for me. David and I and the children had a wonderful holiday, I completed 3 more subjects of my Graduate Diploma of Counselling, I completed a Fondo Ride down near Murwullimbah, I completed the ride leg of the Noosa Triathlon, I had six months of no alcohol, and I have had a wonderful year of spending time with my family and friends. I feel that I eat more healthily, I meditate daily, I exercise regularly and I really enjoy the exercise that I do. I have a wonderful marriage and I am proud and excited about how my children are growing up and I love them very much.

I am looking forward to 2015 very much. I am going to finish my Graduate Diploma, get a job, and continue to build on my fitness. My goal this year is to be stronger. I am going to stop offering excuses about why I am not the fastest strongest rider or the most academic student. I have done so much work on conquering fear and this year is the year I am going to use all the work I have done to be stronger and more confident in all areas of my life. I will always work on developing myself and learning more about how to eat in a way that makes me feel the best, how to exercise in a way that makes me feel the best , how to quieten my mind in a way that makes me function in the happiest way and who to surround myself with to support me and the choices that I make. I am a firm believer that if I am the best person I can be that I have the best chance of having a marriage that is happy and a family who is loving and happy .

I wish all my family and friends much happiness for 2015.

My thoughts about our amazing holiday.

It is Wednesday 15th October today and I am jotting down my final thoughts about our wonderful holiday .
Favourite Place: Granada in Spain.
Favourite Hotel: The Ritz, Madrid
Funniest thing: Stopping for a mule on the highway in Morocco.
Best Bar: Bar au Vin in Bordeaux .
Best view: From the top of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Best meal: La Fabula in Granada.
Best Gallery: Musee D’Orsay in Paris.
Most Comfy Bed: Raffles Hotel in Paris.
Most interesting thing. I learnt: About the Muslim religion in Morocco.
Favourite Food: Tapas in Spain
Most amazing things: Having dinner with the Lentons in Paris, running into Louise Wilson in Morocco.
Best thing about our holiday: Being a family and travelling together.
I am sitting quietly today thinking about our holiday in June. We had the most wonderful time seeing beautiful places, eating scrumptious food, learning about new cultures, and making special family memories.
There have been some terrible things happen in the world since we got home – the Malaysian plane was shot from the sky, the terrible things that ISIS is doing and the Ebola virus to name a few. There is so much fear being perpetrated all over the world. One of the highlights of our holiday for me was coming home and the love I felt for my family and our country.
We live in a country that is free. We are free to be who we want to be, we are free to vote for who we want to run our country, we are free to put our hand up to help run our country if that is our desire and we are free to disagree if we want too.
I am so grateful that we had such a wonderful holiday. I am grateful that we came home to Australia. I am grateful for all the things I experienced while we were away. I am grateful for spending time as a family and I am grateful for spending time with David .
I encourage everyone to travel and I encourage everyone to appreciate what a special country we live in.

Day 39

Today is the last day of my holiday. Tomorrow I fly home. David and I had the choice of a Moroccan cooking class or traveling overland into the Atlas Mountains today. We chose to explore some of the Atlas Mountains. We drove through a valley with villages clinging to the sides of the valley. We visited some local villages and ventured into the wilderness to see some of the mountains.

After exploring we drove to Sir Richard Branson’s property Kasbah Tamadot and had lunch. We ran into a lovely friend who was staying there. It is wonderful to see friends when travelling and what an amazing place to run into Louise Wilson and her friend Louise Hourigan. The world is so big but also so small – I think I worked with Louise Hourigan many years ago when I was a student in the oncology unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

20140816-141156-51116706.jpg
After our busy day we came back to our hotel and had an afternoon nap before venturing out for our last dinner together before I came home.

20140816-142128-51688158.jpg
We went to dinner at Bo – zin. This restaurant seemed to encompass much of the way I feel about Marrakech. It was a very groovy restaurant with beautiful food, full of very well dressed groovy people and the music was modern and fun in the middle of what seemed like nowhere. Marrakech is the most amazing mixture of an old city filled with artisans carrying on old traditions and much new development that is exciting, fun, contemporary, and arty.

Tomorrow I fly home and David flies to Milan for the next part of his adventure.

Day 38

It is Sunday today. I am feeling much better. Thanks to Robyn McAuliffe for her advice about a great travel app – Travel Health. I had antibiotics and gastro stop – both very effective and essential when travelling to places like Morocco. Today we explored the souks, bazaars, gardens and palaces of Marrakech. It was an amazing day! Marrakech is known as the Red City as many of the buildings are made from red sandstone. The old city square is filled with snake charmers, henna artists, monkeys and many other sights and smells. I couldn’t be convinced to hold a snake or even get close enough to have a photo! The souks and bazaars were full of amazing colors, smells and stuff. David and I are not very good at bartering so only managed to buy some scarfs and little handbags for our girls.

We did manage to purchase a beautiful rug!

The palaces we visited had amazing architecture and I loved the beautiful ceilings which were made of cedar.br />

Day 36

Today is Friday. We visited Volubilis – the most amazing Roman ruined city. It has beautifully preserved mosaics dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

On the way to Volubulis we stopped to admire the view. I had to take a photo of one of the mules. They are everywhere here and make me feel like we have stepped back in time. We have got used to the words Barak Barak which means get out of the way of the mule!!!!
