Week Six Monday’s Grateful List

Today I am grateful that I had an outing over the weekend. I walked around the Red Hill Markets with David and then went to the Coffee Club at the Gap for a hot chocolate.

Today I am grateful that I had all my family home on Saturday night. David cooked pork belly, potato bake and roasted carrots and sweet potato. It was lovely. It was one of the first meals not supplied by our amazing friends. We are so grateful to all our friends for their delicious meals but having a meal cooked in our kitchen does bring back some normality into our lives.

Today I am grateful that my magnolia has its first buds on it.

Today I am grateful that the RBH xray department was so efficient today. I had an ultrasound to check everything was ok following my accident. Everything is ok and I was in and out in half an hour.

Today I am grateful that I have read some of my book today. I have not had much concentration in the last few weeks. I think I must be improving !

Week 5 Saturday’s Grateful List

Today I am grateful for my five senses.

Today I am grateful I can see. I can see my garden. I can see the friends who come to visit. I can see the beautiful gifts I have been given.

Today I am grateful that I can hear. I can hear my friends talking when they call me. I can hear the wind in the trees. I can hear beautiful music.

Today I am grateful I can taste. I can taste all the delicious meals that everyone have made our family. I can taste delicious chocolate. I can taste the sugar in my tea. ( I have a very sweet tooth at the moment – I don’t normally . I must be needing the sugar ).

Today I am grateful I can touch. I can feel how warm I am in our cosy home with the fire going. I can feel the cuddles I am getting.

Today I am grateful I can smell. I can smell the fragrance of my roses. I can smell the fragrance of the lovely flowers people have given me.

Week 5 Wednesday’s Grateful List

Today I am grateful for physical touch. I am grateful that I am pain free enough  for David or the children to rub my back and hold my hand. While I was in hospital I was beautifully looked after and encouraged to walk and move in bed but I was surprised that no one offered to give my back a rub. When I got home and the carer that David had organized to help me in the shower offered to rub moisturizer on my back that I realized how much I had been missing skin to skin contact. My Grandpa lived to 99 years old and whenever we visited him he craved cuddles. I now have a little insight into how much we as humans need human touch. I encourage you all today to offer that touch to someone you know. If you visit an elderly relative hold their hands or brush their hair. If you know someone who is living on their own or has lost a partner offer a cuddle or hold their hand.

Today I am grateful for being able to do the little things like brush my own teeth and dry my hair. It is amazing how important these little things become. Many years ago I read a book called Cry of The Damaged Man. It was written by a doctor who had been in a terrible accident. He wrote a book about his recovery. One of the most valuable things for him was washing his face and doing his teeth in the morning in hospital. Some of the nurses would very happily get him a bowl of water and a cup of water to enable him to do this. Other nurses would not and did not understand the importance of these simple tasks. It is something I think that is very important to people who are not well to help them to do simple tasks that they can manage. For me it gives me some control over a situation that I do not have much control over.

Today I am grateful for how incredibly kind people are. I called Paula the owner from Petrol Clothing yesterday afternoon to aske her if she had any ponchos in stock. It is hard for me to put on a coat at the moment because of the splint on my arm and it is so cold. She did have a poncho in stock. Not only did she drop in after work with it but she gave it to me!!!

Today I am grateful that Nicholas came home from safely from Mount Barney. I think he had a great time sitting around the camp fire and sharing stories with mates. I am grateful that the 15 of them that went all got home safely. ( Teenagers and cars are scary! ).

Today I am grateful that the appointment I had yesterday went well. The general surgical team from the RBH do not want to see me again. Yeh!

I hope all of you who are reading my blog today have a lovely day.

Week 5 Monday’s Grateful List

Today I am grateful that I have quite a lot of medical knowledge from days as a registered nurse. I always understood what was happening to me in hospital and I also understand now that although my healing is slower than I would like, it is happening and there are good reasons for why I am tired. I encourage anyone who is involved with hospitals or medical treatment to not be afraid to question what is being done. If I didn’t understand what was being done to me I would have found the situation very difficult. I didn’t have much control over what was happening to me but at least I understood it. I think it is very important for people who are sick to have some control over their situation and understanding what is going on is definetly a step that gives some control. I think the other thing that is very important in these situations is to have someone who can be an advocate for you. I am very grateful that I had two very amazing people who were advocates for me – David and my Dad. Again I encourage anyone who is in the situation of dealing with illness to have someone you trust helping you out to negotiate the medical system.

Today I am grateful for the sunny flowers my friend Deb gave me and the delicious chocolate Ken gave me.

Today I am grateful that I spoke to David’s 93 year old Grandma today. She didn’t want to bother me with phone calls. It was lovely to talk to her today and reassure her I was going to get better. I did get a bit of a talking too about continuing to look after myself and she told me to take notice of Dad he lectured me about further bike riding. Audrey is the most amazing lady and I am so grateful to know and love her.
Today I am grateful that I have had a blood test at home this morning. I needed a blood test done and I called Sullivan and Niccolaides and they have a mobile service so they came here.

Today I am grateful that I got a text from Nicholas to say he is safely at Mount Barney. I think he is crazy camping at Mt Barney in this weather!

My thought for today is:

Week 4 Sunday’s Grateful  list

Today I am grateful for my comfortable bed and my comfortable couch. I am spending a lot of time on both.

Today I am grateful that friends are happy to come and see me at home. I am not up to leaving the house just yet. I get too tired. Thank you to you all.

Today I am grateful that David has been home all day. It is lovely to have his company.

Today I am grateful that I don’t have to make any big decisions about anything at the moment. Life for me is just getting up, having a shower, meditating, eating and resting. I am putting all my energy into these simple tasks and I am very glad I don’t have to do anything else at the moment.

Today I am grateful for computers. I am missing journaling which has been part of my normal routine for many years now but at least I can still blog.

Week 4 Saturday’s Grateful. List

Today I would like to say thank you for all the wishes of encouragement yesterday following my blog post. You were all so positive and encouraging – the collective consciousness has made me feel better today.

Just a warning though – I will try and continue to be positive and live in the moment but……

Today I am grateful that I managed to meditate sitting outside in a chair today instead of lying in bed.

Today I am grateful that there were no more crashes in the Tour de France and the Cavendish finally won the sprint.

Today I am grateful that it is not as cold today as I was expecting it to be.

Today I am grateful that David didn’t crash into the wallaby that he has seen two days running on his ride along Gap Creek Road.
